THA Youth Programs
The Tuscaloosa Housing Authority has partnered with several youth agencies to provide programming for our youth at four of our family developments (Crescent East, Delaware Jackson, Hay Court and Rosedale Court). We also provide space for the Police Athletic League at the Harris-Glynn Gym located at McKenzie Court. These after school and summer programs offer a variety of educational, social and recreational activities for the youth to be involved in as an alternative to undesirable activities.
Throughout the year, the children participate in field trips, organized play, computer activities, karate, study hall and other special events. Some of these special events include: ART*4 ALL (Art lessons are offered free of charge to children ages 6-12. This program has been described as “the best art fun in the world” by the children.), Blues Camp (The children sing, learn about different aspects of music, learn how to play the harmonica and perform in the community.), Career Concepts (The Tuscaloosa Health Dept. talks to the children about career goals and invites speakers from different career backgrounds to talk about their job experiences.) and the UA Law School Reading Program (Law school students act as role-models and assist with reading. As a result, one child improved her grades and made the A/B Honor Roll and another child was complimented by her teacher for advancing from a D to a B on her progress report.)
Regular group discussions on special topics ranging from character building to alcohol / drug prevention are facilitated by the PAL / YMCA staff and Indian Rivers. The topics covered in group sessions teach the youth about respecting themselves. They also enhance the youth’s self-esteem and prepare them for situations they may be faced with later in life.
During the summer months attendance increases because swimming and the free lunch program are included in the weekly schedule at the centers. Several field trips are planned to keep the children involved in positive activities.
Youth program staff work very closely with volunteers and through partnerships with other community programs that serve the same age group. We have partnerships with volunteers from area churches, civic groups, the University of Alabama, Stillman College, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts and others in the local community. These groups have been very beneficial in offering a variety of programs to our youth and are valuable because it enables us to offer an array of services to our children that reach far beyond the normal realm of housing.
