Shelter Care Plus (S+C)
Since 2005 the Tuscaloosa Housing Authority has administered the Shelter + Care Program (S+C) along with the following partnering agencies; West Alabama AIDS Outreach, Indian Rivers Mental Health Center and recently added in 2006, the VA Medical Center. The S+ C program serves a population of homeless individuals with disabilities that traditionally have been hard to reach. The disabilities are limited to serious mental illness, chronic substance abuse and HIV/ AIDS.
While the Tuscaloosa Housing Authority provides rental assistance (based on income) the partnering agencies agree to provide supportive services such as case management, mental health services, substance abuse treatment, and transportation among others.
The goals of the Shelter + Care Program are to assist homeless individuals to increase their housing stability, increase independent living skills and obtain greater self-sufficiency. Currently there are nine disabled individuals receiving S + C services.
